More pictures to come
soon........
Our
day started at O'Hare Airport where we picked up the six cadets and the
escort. After getting our bags we stopped at my house where the cadets
changed into civies because it was truly HOT and sent e-mail home (They also
met Berkley, the German Shepherd who was ecstatic to have all those playmates.
Should have gotten a picture of her trying to get into Linda's garment bag
which was laid out on the floor. After my house we went to the house
were they would be staying in Oak Lawn and dropped their bags.
We
then proceeded downtown and went to Planetarium drive for a lakefront view of
Chicago. After picture taking we went to Gino's for Chicago style at the
request of the Stephanie who had been there before. After writing
on the walls and having a deep-dish Chicago pizza, we went to north Michigan
Avenue where we split up. The males went to the Hancock and the females
made stops at 900 North Michigan and Victoria Secret before rejoining the guys
at Big John.
After
a short wait we took the elevator to the 94th floor. The 360 degree view
of the city generated lots of questions on buildings, landmarks, points of
interest.
After
leaving the Hancock we went to Navy Pier to enjoy the cool (relatively) Lake
Michigan Breeze and let the cadets go through the souvenir shops. After
going through the vendor stalls and walking along the lake, we piled in the
van to go back to their lodgings for the evening (They had been up since
before 4 am Chicago time and the heat and humidity were taking their toll.)
But the van ride took the "Scenic" route and they saw the Picasso,
the Chagall, and several pieces of Sweet Home Chicago. They also got a
chance to taste "Fudge" since an explanation of "fudge"
didn't work too well.
Sunday
was built around flying at Lewis Airport. Illinois Pilots (Sorry, I
don't have all the names - I know Dennis Grandalski was one) took them on an
aerial tour of the city including stops at local airports where they were
allowed to switch seats so everybody got a chance to fly. As the
temperature soared Sunday, the aircraft returned to :Lewis where members of
Group 2 and 14 meet the Cadets for a picnic. (In an air conditioned
hangar) Because of heat and dangerous thunderstorms moving into the
area, the afternoon flying and ballooning was scrubbed and replaced with a
"mall excursion" and a movie.
